PITTSBURGH – The Allegheny County Elections Division today encouraged voters who need an absentee ballot to apply well before the October 29 deadline. This year, voters have the option to apply online on the state’s votespa.com website for an absentee ballot to make the process faster, more convenient and more accessible.

Voters should remember that while the application process is more streamlined, the mailing of a ballot and the voting of it may still be reliant upon the U.S. Mail. Absentee ballots are available for voters who will be absent from their municipality on November 5, or those who cannot reach the polls due to an illness or physical disability, whose application is received by the Elections Division no later than 5:00 p.m. next Tuesday, October 29. The completed, or voted, absentee ballots must then be received by the Elections Division no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 1. A timely postmark is not sufficient.

If concerned about the time to receive, complete and return the absentee ballot, voters are encouraged to submit their applications in person which will allow them to receive an absentee ballot that can be completed and returned while there in the office.

Absentee ballots applicants must provide basic voter registration information and specify the reason for applying to vote absentee. All those voting by absentee ballot will be required to provide a Pennsylvania Driver’s License number, PennDOT ID number, or the last four digits of their social security number. If none of these are available, a photocopy of an acceptable photo ID must be included. A list of approved, alternative types of identification is available on the Absentee Ballot page of VotesPA.com. If in doubt, voters may call the county’s Elections Division at 412-350-4520 or the VotesPA toll-free number at 1-877-VotesPA (877-868-3772) regarding acceptable ID.

Voters wishing to submit their applications in person can do so at the Elections Division between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The office is located at 542 Forbes Avenue in Room 601 of the County Office Building in downtown Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, PA 15219).

The Elections Division also reminds residents who intend to vote in the Municipal Primary that they may verify their registration, look up their polling place and view a sample ballot online at the county’s “On Election Day” webpage.

Twenty-seven (27) polling place locations have changed since the May primary. Voters in affected districts will be notified by letter from the Elections Division. Additionally, the Elections Division will post notices at the old polling locations on Election Day to redirect voters to the new locations.
